So, this will be the world’s shortest (and vague) race report from last month’s Cave Creek Thriller. Here’s what I learned:

1. I go out too fast every time. Every. Freaking. Time. I gotta come up with some kind of mind trick to keep me on pace early in the run. I’m debating hypnosis of some kind. Maybe I’ll watch Stir of Echoes the night before any ultras.

2. Pass the salt (and potassium and chloride and bicarbonate and citrate). If it wasn’t for the S Caps around mile 23 and the 20+ ounces of Nuun at mile 26, I would have DNF’d. I didn’t figure out that electrolytes were my big issue until after the race. Bottom line: I need to be organized about electrolytes in the future.

3. When it’s hot and you’re 20+ miles in, a bandana with ice is better than cookies, sex, and angels (put together). My buddy Noah gave me one outside mile 25, and in doing so he became my new hero.

On a final note: when you’re ready to DNF, drink a little, eat a little, and give it 20 minutes.

VT 100 UltraMarathon series of photos from professional photographer Tom Sperduto. It’s very cool. Very inspirational.

Based on some of the picks (and our limited knowledge of VT), we’d love to run this race.

Minimalist running? Here are six simple exercises for stronger strides.

This is the proper way to carb load. Trust me.
