Cave Creek Thriller 50k: Pace & Salt & Ice
So, this will be the world’s shortest (and vague) race report from last month’s Cave Creek Thriller. Here’s what I learned:
1. I go out too fast every time. Every. Freaking. Time. I gotta come up with some kind of mind trick to keep me on pace early in the run. I’m debating hypnosis of some kind. Maybe I’ll watch Stir of Echoes the night before any ultras.
2. Pass...

VT 100 UltraMarathon series of photos from professional photographer Tom Sperduto. It’s very cool. Very inspirational.
Based on some of the picks (and our limited knowledge of VT), we’d love to run this race.

Want a great workout? Try running from zombies.
Place this one in the “Woa, why didn’t I think of that?” category.
Zombies, Run! is an app for your phone that you play while you’re running. As you run, you rack up resources (stuff like ammo & medicine), listen to the story unfold, and do your best to stay ahead of the zombie horde. When you get back from your run, you use the resources you collected to plan a...

Make Your Own Energy Bars
Thanks to the folks over at You Bar you can easily make your own energy bar. It’s like Subway for power food. You pick what works for you. Here’s the run down:
Pick your base: almond/cashew/peanut butter, dates.
Pick some protein, if you want it.
Add nuts and seeds.
Add fruits and berries (they have cherries—yum).
Pick a sweetener: honey, brown rice syrup.
Choose from some...

Cheap, Delicious Recovery? Try Chocolate Milk
We had a cooler full of chocolate milk during my last relay race and I thought is was pretty goofy. I was the most experienced runner on the team and I let my pretentiousness creep in. I didn’t say anything, mind you. I’m not that rude. But, I did secretly think it was cute and even a little charming that this little band of runners had decided to reward themselves with mini milkshakes during...

Desert Runner Trail Series: DRT
For some, the trail running season is wrapping up. October is just around the corner and it’s a perfect time to let the snow, frigid temperatures, and oh-so-delicious comfort food keep you inside and on the couch for a little while. Unless, of course, you live in the desert (or somewhere south of the equator). We’re some of the lucky ones. Despite the urban sprawl and foul-colored skies,...

Gentlemen, Protect Your Nipples
Nipple-talk. It’s one of the perks of being a runner. As soon as you can trot along non-stop for 60 minutes, you earn the right to talk about nipples wherever and whenever you want. It’s true. You get a special card. We have one. It’s an official Fissure of the Nipple Club Card. There’s a nipple awareness 5K that they sponsor every year. We’ve heard nipple discussions at dinners, at work, at...

If you run, I think you know what I mean.
I always stop running for a couple of weeks after a 50-miler. It’s not really intentional. I’m not smart enough to know if this is because my body needs me to take it easy, or if I feel like I’ve earned the right to not run for a few days.
See, the thing is: running isn’t always my favorite thing to do. Sometimes I read. Sometimes I write. Sometimes I take my daughter out for frozen yogurt...
